About the Northern
Ceramic Society
The
Northern Ceramic Society was founded in 1972 by a small group of
enthusiastic collectors. From small beginnings, the Society has grown
substantially and now has nearly a thousand members in the UK and
overseas.
The
Northern Ceramic Society (NCS) is a registered UK charity whose
objectives are the study of the history and manufacture of ceramics
(principally British) of the last five centuries and of the social
history of the ceramics industry and its key figures. All aspects of
production are considered, including design, manufacture and decoration,
and also marketing and ultimate use.
The
President of the NCS is Geoffrey A Godden (Hon) DLitt FRSA. The NCS
Chairman is Maurice Hillis BSc PhD.
Members
of the NCS enjoy:
A Programme of Monthly Meetings at various venues in northern
England, featuring illustrated lectures by speakers with specialist
knowledge of the chosen topic. There are also opportunities for members
to view the collections at that museum and any special exhibitions
there, to have their own ceramic pieces identified and discussed by
experts, and to compare notes with other collectors and researchers in a
friendly, welcoming atmosphere. All members may attend meetings free of
charge.
The NCS Newsletter, issued quarterly free to all members,
containing illustrated articles based on members’ research, the
Society’s programme of activities, a diary of events of ceramic
interest, book reviews, reports on recent meetings, museum news and
other useful information.
