Rectangles, Flowers, Angels, and Ovals; Staffordshire Pad Mark Pottery

A display of recently acquired early 19th century pad marked, bone china and stoneware ceramics. On show are wares attributed to the factories of John & William Ridgway and John & Richard Riley as well as those attributed to unidentified factories currently referred to as Imperial Stone & Oval pad mark, Chrysanthemum factory, and Angels and Banner pad mark.

The difficultly in attributing pottery without a recognised makers name or mark is compounded by the lack of surviving archive relating to large numbers of individual pottery manufacturers in North Staffordshire. The attribution of ware to Imperial Stone & Oval pad mark, Chrysanthemum factory, and Angels and Banner pad mark is often the result of connoisseurship.
